Dual Charging Cords for Electric Cars in the US
With the launch of electric cars on the scale in California, each model had its own way of being charges. That created a bit of a confusion. It cost extra to install different charging stations easy with the power adapter that had to be purchased separately.
In 2011, the market for electric cars was revolutionized and this problem was solved. Currently, the plug-in vehicles sold in the U. S. are using a round charging connector also known as J-1772. The electric cars started coming with a charging cord tucked away in the trunk of the cars. The cord uses the North American wall current of 120 volts. This is called Level 1 charging.
In the past couple of years, a number of carmaking companies have started coming out with further solutions to charging issues and needs. Some of those companies include BMW, Volvo, Nissan, and Audi as well. Those four brands use three different plugs of 240 of voltage. They are created by NEMA, which is short for National Electrical Manufacturers Association.
One of the latest advancements in the field of electric cars is the Aerovironment TurboCord. The charging cord consists of your standard charging cable which is attached to a plastic box which contains all the electronics needed. The great thing about it is the pair of interchangeable plugs which are often referred to as ”pigtails”. One of the pigtails allows for a standard usage of a 120-volt plug while the other has a different plug which first into a wall socket of 240 volts.
In the U. S., there are a few types of 240-volt wall sockets. The carmaking companies mention have been trying to solve the issue by allowing the option of other types of NEMA lugs to be ordered such as the NEMA 6- 20 and the NEMA 6-50, and NEMA 14-50 for an additional price.
