VW settles diesel owner suit on eve of trial

During the mid-2010s, one of the biggest stories in the auto industry occurred when it was revealed that VW purposely lied to car buyers about the efficiency and emissions that were created by their clean-diesel vehicles. While the company eventually admitted fault and agreed to a settlement with all buyers in the United States, not all of the buyers have participated in the settlement.

Of the 30,000 buyers in the United States, a little less than 2,000 of the buyers decided to not be part of the class-action settlement. In these situations, many of the buyers have decided that the better option would be to pursue a case outside of the class action suit.

This past week, VW looked as if they would be going to trial with one car buyer that was still angry over the fraud. Knowing that they would end up losing due to the amount of evidence, VW opted to finally come to a settlement with the buyer on the eve of the start of the new trial.

At this point, it remains to be seen what the settlement amount will be with the plaintiff. The company has already spent an incredible amount of money. Overall, the company has spent more than $25 billion settling a large class action case, paying fines, and settling smaller cases outside of the class action settlement. The company is likely going to face a wide range of other lawsuits in the future as well as more and more buyers are filing suits.
